Logistics

Parking and Travel Information:

Evening programming on Sunday and Tuesday will be held at Mitten Hall on Temple University’s campus. Besides limited street parking on Broad Street, the Liacouras Parking Garage (1710 N. 15th St.) provides parking at a daily rate of $20/per entry. After parking, participants can walk up to Broad Street (one block east), cross Broad, and then walk north on Broad to Polett Walk to reach Mitten Hall. Volunteers will be waiting there to welcome everyone. Attendees will access Mitten Hall through the Broad Street entrance (the accessible entrance is on the side of the building).

Daytime programming on Monday and Tuesday will be held at the Howard Gittis Student Center on Temple’s campus. The parking lot adjacent to the Student Center is the Cecil B. Moore Lot (on Cecil B. Moore Ave. between 12th and 13th Sts.), which offers daily parking for $20/per entry. However, it is suggested that, on Tuesday, attendees may want to park in the 15th St. lot (located at 1855 N. 15th St.) for the day and evening, and walk to the Student Center, since the evening programming in Mitten Hall is much closer to the 15th St. lot.

Conference attendees will enter the Student Center through the South Entrance (see map), which is located along 13th St. and offers direct access to the event. Once inside, attendees will be directed by volunteers to use the stairs or elevators to reach the second floor of the Student Center South, where they can check in at the Registration Table. The main (plenary) room is 200C.

Traveling with SEPTA (Public Transit) or Lyft / Uber:

Temple University is conveniently located along many major public transit routes. For those interested in using the train or bus, fare costs $2 when paid with a SEPTA keycard or contactless ‘tap’ payment options, such as a tap-enabled credit or debit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. Cash is also accepted for travel on all SEPTA transit, although exact fare of $2.50 must be presented. Seniors can inquire about free fares. Temple is also accessible by the Broad Street Subway. All local subway trains stop at the Cecil B. Moore station located at Broad St. and Cecil B. Moore Ave.

The 4 and 16 SEPTA buses stop on Broad St. at Cecil B. Moore Ave., Montgomery St., Polett Walk, and Norris Street. The 23 bus stops on 12th St. (southbound) and 11th St. (northbound) at Polett Walk, Montgomery St., and Cecil B. Moore Ave.

SEPTA Regional Rail Lines: All lines stop at Temple University Station, located at 10th and Berks Streets. The station is a 5-minute walk to Mitten Hall and the Student Center.

The use of Lyft or Uber is certainly an option in getting around locally, including to and from hotels, which are all a short drive from the university.

Sunday, November 12th Eastern State Penitentiary (for those who have pre-registered)

Location: Eastern State Penitentiary – 2027 Fairmount Avenue Philadelphia, PA 19130.
Time: 2:30 – 4:00 PM EST
Although there is not a parking lot associated with Eastern State, there is free street parking bordering the penitentiary. There is also a paid lot adjacent to the site. Eastern State Penitentiary is a short, ten-minute drive from Temple’s campus. It is also a short walk and bus ride from Mitten Hall, where the opening reception will be held on Sunday evening. Attendees can catch the #33 Bus (towards 23rd & Venango) at 20th St. and Fairmount Ave. and ride it to 19th and Norris, then walk east on Norris St. to Mitten Hall’s entrance on Broad Street.

Much of Eastern State Penitentiary is an open-air experience, so attendees should dress according to outdoor weather conditions. The cell blocks tend to be quite cold during this season, so it is advisable to wear a few layers of clothing. This experience will include an hour-long tour that details the history and current relevance of the penitentiary. An additional half-hour to hour of free time is available to further explore the historic site.

Monday, November 13th Evening Programming at the Philadelphia Jail

Location: Phila. Industrial Correctional Center (PICC), 8301 State Rd., Phila., PA 19136
Time: 4:00 PM – 10:00 PM (including travel)
Participants who desire shuttle service to the PICC evening event will meet at 4:15 PM outside of the Student Center to board departing buses. It is expected that the buses will return to the same spot later in the evening by approximately 9:30 PM. Anyone driving would do well to leave at the same time (4:15 PM).

All guests will need to have photo ID (license, passport, etc.) to be permitted to enter the jail. Please note that the name listed on the ID should match the name on the master list that will be submitted in advance.

No personal items can be left on the bus, so all attendees must secure their belongings in a personal vehicle or in the secure room that will be provided by the jail. Electronics, including cellular devices and smart watches, will not be allowed inside the jail. They can be left in the secure room provided. Concerns about these policies should be communicated to io.25ann@temple.edu before the event.

Coats are permitted and they will be locked in an office in PICC. Please dress appropriately for the jail: i.e., nothing tight or see-through; no flip-flops or sandals or open-toed shoes; no hoodies; no holes in clothing; no excessive jewelry; no food or drinks; no medication or drugs; etc.

Anyone driving to PICC on Monday evening can park at no cost in the House of Correction (HOC) lot. This lot is off of State Rd. between several prisons and close to the intersection of Rhawn and State Rds. Travelling north on State Rd., it is the next light after the Rhawn and State intersection. Make a right into that entrance and then a left to park in the larger lot. The administration suggests parking in this lot rather than on the street. To get from the HOC parking lot to PICC, you can walk approximately 2.5 blocks on State Rd. sidewalks or take the provided shuttle to the jail.

Finally, please make sure we know if you are driving and/or if you have any dietary restrictions.
